Hypnotherapy vs
talk therapy.

Rocky tide pool coastline — hypnotherapy vs talk therapy

These aren’t really separate, competing approaches — in practice, hypnotherapy is very rarely delivered without talk therapy alongside it. Here’s how they relate.

How hypnotherapy relates to talk therapy

A hypnotherapy session is not simply the hypnosis part on its own — it is essentially impossible to conduct a session without also using talk therapy skills. Every session includes a conscious, conversational component: understanding what has brought you in, building rapport, reframing thoughts, and reflecting on what came up. Hypnosis is then used alongside this, working with a state of deep relaxation and focused attention to help those changes take hold at a deeper, more subconscious level.

Which is right for you?

It isn’t really an either/or choice. Many clients find that combining focused hypnosis with counselling and talk therapy skills allows change to happen more directly than talk therapy alone, particularly for anxiety, phobias, trauma, confidence and habit change.
